In recent decades, impressive efforts have been made in the field of simulation, optimization, and examination of engineering systems through the second law of thermodynamics and reduction of irreversibility.

Given the fact that we are dealing with a large amount of heat and energy in the steam generators, the problem of optimizing and increasing the efficiency of the steam generator and consequently, increasing the efficiency of the PWRs becomes important. The remaining saturated liquid goes to downcomer and is mixed with the feedwater and this cycle continues, see Fig.

This heat causes two-phase flows in the secondary side, then, the separators drives the steam of two-phase flow towards the turbine. The heat generated in the core is driven by U-tubes into the steam generator. The water in the primary side is in the form of a high pressure liquid and a stream in the second side is in the form of two-phase water and steam, which has a pressure of about half the primary side. The main tasks of this component is to transfer heat from the primary side to the secondary side with the thin U-tubes, and also to create a barrier between Primarily and the surrounding environment. In this study we are talking about PWRs, the Steam generator in this plants are vertical and this is one of the most important component of a PWR, which generally consists of two primary and secondary side. Steam generators are available in a wide range of sizes and shapes, from small steam generators used in the medical industry until the very large steam generators in steam generating plants. These are heat from various sources, such as burning coal, petroleum gas, natural gas, municipal waste or biomass, solar power, PWRs core or other sources. Steam generators are one of many types of heat exchangers that are used as a heat source to convert liquid water to steam. Also, the effectiveness for design parameters has increased from 0.71 up to 0.82.ĭue to the shortage of energy sources in recent years, as well as increasing energy demand due to population growth, the prevention and reduction of energy losses in thermodynamic systems is significant. In this study we reduced the entropy generation number value from 0.061 to 0.055 for design parameters, which represents about 10% improvement in entropy generation number. In order to determine the two-phase flow characteristics, a thermal equilibrium mixture model with an algebraic relation between the velocities (or a slip ratio) of the two phases is used. So the effects of all the parameters influencing on a vertical steam generator were initially separate and then simultaneously examined on entropy generation number and the exact optimal parameters for the least entropy generation number using the genetic algorithm are calculated in the MATLAB toolbox. The main goal of vertical steam generator optimization is to obtain the optimal parameters as well as to increase the steam generator efficiency and consequently to increase the efficiency of the PWRs. Hence, in this paper, we used the entropy generation equations in accordance the second law of thermodynamics, also the Drift-flux method for two-phase flow (introduced by Zuber-Findlay) and the genetic algorithm to optimize a vertical steam generator.
